About Great Bentley

Welcome to Great Bentley

Great Bentley is located in Essex within the Tendring District; it is approximately 60 miles North East of London and 10 miles from Colchester. The village is within a few miles of the seaside towns of Frinton, Clacton, Walton, Dovercourt and Brightlingsea. The port of Harwich is also easy to access from the village by road. Great Bentley’s closest neighbours are the villages of Frating, Thorrington, St. Osyth, Little Bentley, and Weeley.

The population of the parish of Great Bentley, as measured in the 2001 census, is 2,259.

The centre of the village is taken up by 42.5 acres of a well maintained Village Green, reputed to be the largest Village Green in England.

A Brief History

The village is mentioned as far back as the Doomsday Book at that time it was situated amongst large wooded areas; clearing of these woods began in 1135. In its early days the village was named Benetlea, then Much Bentley and later still Great Bentley. The first part of the name, Bent, is thought to refer to a type of grass, and the later part, lea, probably derives from the word ley, meaning land sown with grass, which suggests a direct reference to the green.

Great Bentley did have a port at Flag Creek which was used to import and export goods.

Queen Elizabeth I once visited Lord Darcy’s residence, St Osyth priory; it is believed she may have arrived at Harwich accompanied by her courtiers and rode via Horsley Cross, Little Bentley then onto Great Bentley Green before finishing her journey to St Osyth.

Great Bentley owes much of its growth to the coming of the railway in 1885/86, with the railway station being named Bentley Green before being changed to Great Bentley in 1877.

Two new housing estates were built in the 1960’s to either side of the Village Green. This was followed by a trading estate being developed close to the railway station, now known as the Plough Road Business Centre.

At that time the village boasted five public houses, Post Office, a Garage, several small retail shops and businesses, a School and a Doctor’s surgery.

Also in the 60’s Great Bentley Parish Council, on behalf of the village, purchased the Manorial Rights of the 42.5 acres of Common Land. Much of the purchase price was raised through voluntary donations from the residents and fund raising events. The land was then registered as Village Green to protect the green for the future from encroachment and erosion. The Village Green and nearby properties are a Conservation Area. The Parish Council, through the Common Land and Village Green Acts, ensures the protection of the Village Green.

The village is very proud of the title that it achieved in the year 2000

when it won

Great Britain Village of the Year

Events Held on the Green

The Carnival takes place each year on the last Saturday in June. The Annual Fair arrives adding to the Carnival Flavour throughout the week prior to the Carnival taking place. This still proves to be a popular event within the village.

The Great Bentley Village Show is also another popular annual attraction. This show is held on the Saturday that follows the August Bank Holiday Monday. Part of the show is held in a marquee for the flower, vegetable, cookery, art and craft exhibits. There are many stalls outside the marquee plus a Dog Show.

The Running Club holds a half marathon annually.

Football and Cricket Clubs

The Football Club supports three adult teams and a youth football group of 150 youngsters of mixed ages.

Cricket has been played on the Green for at least 240 years. There are four teams, two adult and two junior. The pitch is enclosed on three sides by public roads; all within the boundary distance, which must be fairly unique.

We hope this gives you a taste to find out more about Great Bentley. Please take a look at the pictures residents have sent in to the web site when special events have taking place in the village.
